Sometimes when I can’t write — meaning, when I feel blocked and no ideas are coming through — I’ll go out and take a walk. Preferably, I’ll leave my phone at home and just grab a notebook. But if I must, I’ll keep my notes app on deck.
All I do is simply look at my surroundings and breathe. Then, once I find a particularly good spot to stop, I record what I see.
I write as if I am a translator. I sketch a tree, a flower, a road with only words. I let what I am looking at come alive before me. I give it center stage. I pretend it is as human as me. I try not to force any narratives and instead let what I’m looking at guide me. I shift into an arena of complete and utter presence.
I believe writing at its barest essence is quite simple. It’s just telling the truth. All it is, is paying attention. To what you see. Not necessarily anyone else.
And we miss so much in the world by not paying attention. There are so many things the world wants to show us, that we turn a blind eye to. We think the ideas in our mind are better. We try to force our hand at the world. Yet, every idea I have ever loved, has come to me as if it were dropped from some sort of ether. Some realm outside of myself that said — Here, take this.
Now, we can’t control those moments and when they happen. Divinity strikes at its own accord. But, I do believe there is a way to open yourself to more hits.
This Tuesday at 6pm PST I’ll be guiding my first virtual writing workshop with Heretics Club. It’ll be centered on how to find inspiration and break free from creative stagnation. I’ll be expanding upon and guiding you through my favorite process of writing. Of how to open the world around you. This is for writers and non-writers alike. All it will be is a practice of presence. A complete devotion to it.
Writing is not just a tool for text, it is a way to access and reframe the mind. It is a way to create openings. A way to reach inside.
Hope I'll see you there — sign up here :*)
