Hi electricians,
How funny is it if I called this community that? Lol. Anyways. I’m in a good mood. It’s Aries season and even though I’m a Pisces, I am soooo happy Pisces season is over. The moment the new zodiac season began a fire soared back into me. I’m excited to use it. I hope you are too.
Anyways, I want to tell you about something extremely exciting that happened.
To me, writing should be a shared act. It doesn't feel complete for me if I can’t engage with others or an audience. My words want to be thrown into the arms of the other. So, with this in mind, I knew I wanted to expand Electric Blue into the physical realm.
For my birthday this year, the only way I wanted to celebrate was by throwing a party with a sick DJ but also have an environment where writers would read their work. A kind of rave/poetry hybrid. I didn’t know if people would be into it, but I went through with it anyways, because I knew I wanted it. The intersection of the profound in a party/music-driven atmosphere is the encapsulation of who I am. I also wanted to create a place where people interested in art could meet in a going-out setting.
Thus, I created electric blue: houseparty. Where I featured a lineup of incredible readers, booked one of my favorite DJs (who's a wildly gifted writer/artist too), and had a friend with a really cool reworked vintage brand do a pop-up — all in Heauxdega’s stunning studio space in the heart of DTLA.
I was expecting maybe 40 people max to show up.
After 160 RSVPS, over 100 people showed up. I was truly stunned. And so many people came up to me saying how they were looking for an environment like this. Someone even called it “disco poetry”, and it really, really affected me. Because I’ve had this urge and this idea for so long but never acted upon it. I just didn’t think anyone else would care. But people did care. And realizing that was a major breakthrough for me.
It’s a reminder that whatever we are drawn to, even though they may seemingly conflict, have a relationship for you to discover. There’s a reason we are passionate about what we are passionate about. And there is a root connecting them. It’s up to you to find the courage to connect them.
Other people will thank you for it too. Because they also feel it.
